CARECEN offers 10 week civics and English classes for those aspiring to US Citizenship. Related opportunities include:
Mock Interviewer - 3 hour one-time commitment

Want to volunteer as a mock interviewer for students of CARECEN's citizenship classes? As the culmination of their 10-week session, citizenship students will meet with volunteers who will simulate the naturalization interview that prospective citizens have with immigration officers. We ask that volunteers arrive at 9:30am for a short orientation. At 10 am we will place you in an office, where you will act as an immigration officer and give the citizenship test to students who come into your office individually. NO SPANISH NEEDED!
Citizenship Workshops - 5 hour one-time commitment
Come help eligible immigrants fill out their applications for citizenship! Our attorney will train you on the process after which we will begin filling out the applications (form N-400), for those who have made appointments with CARECEN for this workshop.
Citizenship Teacher - 2 hour weekly commitment for 10 weeks
Classes are Tuesdays (6-8pm) and Saturdays (10-12noon, 2-4pm)
Do you enjoy teaching and want to help students prepare for their citizenship interview and exam? CARECEN needs citizenship class teachers for its 10-week sessions. Teachers instruct in English or Spanish depending upon the class, and will cover different aspects of United States history and government. If enough volunteers are available, we pair teachers together for each class so that they can cover for each other when needed.
ESL Teacher - 2 hour weekly commitment for 10 weeks
Classes are Wednesdays (6-8pm) and Saturdays (12:30-2:00pm). Want to teach English to speakers of other languages? CARECEN offers an ESL component for our citizenship prep class for those students who want to practice writing and conversation.
Tutor
On a need basis, usually week nights and Saturdays, but times can be arranged with the student. We usually offer tutoring to those individuals who will take their naturalization exam soon. They generally need intensive preparation in answering the test questions and practicing their English. Please call or email to find out about current tutoring opportunities. Don't worry if you can't make it to upcoming sessions - we will need people for future classes as well. Contact us!
Join CARECEN! Become a friend, volunteer and activist by getting involved in campaigns we organize around issues of concern to the Latino community. In 2009-2010 we will continue training community leaders to advocate on behalf of their peers, we will grow our efforts to promote citizenship and we will advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.
